Bhagavad Gita as view by Swami Vivekananda

Completed reading Bhagavad Gita as Viewed by Swami Vivekananda.

I had high expectations from this book.

Honestly, within the first few chapters, I was disappointed.

I expected this to be Swami Vivekananda's direct discourse or interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita. Instead, it is a compilation by Swami Madhurananda, who has brought together Swami Vivekananda's teachings, lectures and writings from various occasions, and presented them chapter-wise alongside the Bhagavad Gita.

Initially, this wasn't what I was looking for.

However, from around the fifth or sixth chapter onwards, the book contains more of Swami Vivekananda's original words and quotations. That encouraged me to continue reading, and by the end, I was glad I finished it.

I still wish the book had been more explicit in its title and description that it is a compilation and interpretation of Swami Vivekananda's teachings rather than a direct commentary written by him.

Does this book have one good idea, or does it have enough depth to justify an entire book?

It has enough depth to justify an entire book. However, readers should approach it with the right expectation. If you're looking for Swami Vivekananda's own systematic commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, this isn't that book. If you're interested in understanding the Gita through the lens of his teachings compiled by a disciple, it is a worthwhile read.

The art of purring by David Michie

 

Another super lovely book by David Michie. I finished reading the book The art of purring in 4 days. It's a small book of 200 pages. You can finish it in one day. I was trying to read Friendship with God in parallel. 

This is book 2 of the series of 5 books: The Dalai Lama's Cat.  I read the first book thrice if I am right. I bought the book 2 long ago. I already bought book 3: The power of meow. However to break the pattern, I will temporarily pause and read something else before I come back to book 3.

Just like book 1, The art of purring is beautifully written by David Michie. He is such a good writer. Lovely narration from a cat's view. He makes you walk around like a cat in your mind. The light sense of humour, subtle twists in the story, casual way of including spiritual teachings.....no overdoing of purring just to fit into the title of the book..... yet so relevant. I felt fresh reading this book. Just like book 1, I loved it. My rating: 5/5

Tales From Rumi

 

I have always admired the quotes by Rumi. So a friend gifted this book to me. It's supposed be translation of Rumi's teachings with some stories he has narrated. The book is supposed to explain the inner meaning and significance of the stories. 

Here I keep saying "supposed to" because it simply didn't. According to me, they have used some translation tool to translate the book. Most of the book is gibberish since the tool has made a word to word translation. The sentences made no sense. 

I can't really say I read the book. I simply brushed through it. I must have read about 5 or 6 stories for the whole book without getting any relevance or significance. 

I don't recommend this book.  1/5 rating. 

How to love by Thich Nhat Hanh

 

Just finish reading this book. Its a book of collection of quotes from various talks by the Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh.

I have watched some of the videos and read some quotes here and there by him. I loved it and hence bought 2 of his books. I didn't know that this book is collection of quotes. Had I known...I guess I wouldn't buy it.

Obviously its not a book to be read in a day or two or even rush through the quotes. I would read a few pages now and then and tried tomeditate on it the whole day. The beauty of this book is....its not random collection of quotes. Its organised to give a flow. All about love...starting from what is true love, how to cultivate, how to Express,  importance of self love, how to forgive myself,  others, life situation and loved ones........ how to support each other in love, how to sustain the love in the relationship.......

Very thoughtful,  mindful, compassionate expression of love.

It helped me gain some insights in some intense situations and regain my control over my emotions. So it was worth investing my time reading this book.

It was a slowwww. ....pleasant reading....

Only love is real by Dr.Brian Weiss

I have previously read the book Many Masters Many lives by Dr. Brian Weiss.  This book is equally good.  I loved the past life regression and the life lessons narrated. Its amazing how destiny finds it's way to unite the soul mates.

I liked the storyline of this book. It doesn't exaggerate the story of the 2 soul mates uniting. It rather justifies the title of the book. Every life and life situations bring a deeper lesson of love.

The Aghoris By Mayur Kalbag

 

Read this book a few months ago: The Aghoris by Mayur Kalbag.

The book was super interesting. I didn't want to get into the debate whether it is fictional or non fictional. I have heard of many real stories from authentic sources but at the same time I have never witnessed any Aghori Babas performing any miracles.

Irrespective of that the book, the stories, the details of the rituals, the detailed explanation of the author's experience of meeting the various Gurus....was very very interesting and attention grabbing. 

I loved the light sense of humor that blends with the flow of the scenarios. The story telling of the whole journey is simple, seamlessly realistic. 

The Mental body by A E Powell

This is probably the most lengthy review I have written of any book. I wouldn't call this a review....it's more of a short notes or summary of some aspects of the book which is appealing to me. Hope this encourages someone to read this book.
I personally think that it is more meaningful to read Etheric double and Astral Body book before you read this though it's understandable even otherwise. Below are some of the definitions and my understanding of the concepts:


Prarabddha Karma
Repeated thinking or mental activity over incarnations makes a part of the mental body active. Example: A soul who has been repeatedly a mathematician over one or many incarnations, will have an active Mathematical thinking pattern. This soul subsequently tends to perceive every situation in life through this pattern. This is called Prarabddha Karma.
Insight: Now there could be the karma or the effect of an action by the soul driven by this pattern. Or the higher soul might want to provoke the soul to exercise other aspects of the mental body. Hence it will lead the soul to situations which cannot be perceived through this pattern or the solution cannot be derived through this pattern. So the soul is forced to think out of the box. This also could probably be termed as Prarabddha Karma.

When we travel to New places the unaccustomed energy vibrations of the place will bring life to the astral mental and Etheric part of the body which has otherwise remained latent. That's y travel is good

The freedom to choose between the desires shows that mental body is higher to the astral body

The initial meaning of spiritualism:

This goes back to the preliminary initiation period. A dead person was chosen, awakened sufficiently on the astral plane, trained with the principles and powers of Astral plane and then handed over to the spiritual group with some purpose. This trained person would further train other dead people on the same lines and this group would impress the spiritual purpose on the earthly life. The Master of the group would guide the spiritual guide of the group. When it became impossible to hold back this leader of the group, he was allowed to move on to the higher world which was long pending for him. Now the new leader was chosen and he would take on the astral form of the later or use his shade(mental image in astral plane) to carry on with the work.

However no Master/adept of the Himalayas were involved in this, since this was artificial and also prone to the black magician influence. Which inventually did happen. I think this was the downfall of the Atlantans.

When a soul reincarnates, it attracts the mental and astral material around itself from its past life. So the previous habits virtues and vices are present in the latent form. Egs. Drinking affinity. However if the soul is virtuously guided by the parents, in this incarnation the soul might refrain from these habits. Then these latent tendencies slowly die and are not carried forward in the next incarnation. Such is the importance of the parents and the teachers in the journey of the monad.

Sometimes the soul gets stuck in its shade/ yet to disintegrate astral corpse/ the astral body of the animal that the soul had previously abducted. Such souls generally don't reach the physical world unless they are free from it. Under rare circumstances the human soul reincarnates in the animal body. The body of the animal is more of prison than any good for the growth of the soul. Under most cases these souls are born with predominant animal nature. The physical body may sometimes reassemble the animal.

Ways of thought transference:
A certain sect or group or religious belief thoughtforms which are constantly energised over ages. When the mental body comes in contact with such a thoughtform, a copy of it is impressed into the mental body. Further the mental body may in turn contribute it's part by reacting to the thoughtform launched.
Another influence is the thought corpse of a soul which has departed. The corpse sometimes hangs around like that of an astral corpse for long time. When the soul reincarnates it makes an impression or launches itself into the newly built mental body.
Yet another sacred training method of thought transference is as follows. A highly evolved teacher would keep his disciple in his vicinity to serve the Guru with all his needs. In the meantime, the constant impression from the teacher moulds the mental body of the students with the teachings and the purpose of the incarnation. Now with little training the student is ready to tune into the mental body and bring the purpose into full action.

We have heard of many stories of this kind where the great teacher suddenly declared his student as an initiate. This includes the story of Lord Buddha initiating Ananda. When his co disciples asked the teacher, Lord Buddha said, I meditated on his behalf. Now the meaning is more clear :)

Mental clairvoyance:
In Hinduism, anima is zoom in to the details and Mahima is zoom out to see the big picture in mental clairvoyantic vision.

If you have attended Master Choa's higher clairvoyance course, the description mentioned in the book will make deeper sense.

Intuitive intelligence
The chakras in ordinary people are slightly bent towards the vortex. However as the chakras evolve, they align better. As the crown aligns to the pineal gland, the impressions and communication from the higher soul can bypass the astral body and impress the physical brain directly.
Intuition comes from Atmic to the Atmic mental to Atmic Astral to Atmic Etheric. Hence the brain is incapable of perceiving this information.
Insight:
However in Meditation on twin hearts this information is flashed/impressed to the brain. That's y it develops intuition. Such a high technology given to public. What a teacher!!
This explains to a certain extent why crown is the centre of buddhic consciousness and why meditation on twin hearts improves our intuitive faculty.

Meditation:
Its the inexpressible longing of the inner man for the infinite- HPB
According to Patanjali, 5+1 stages of mind on any plane during meditation:
Kshipta: jumping like butterfly
Mudha: confused
Vikshipta: Infactuation. Need to develop Viveka
Ekagrata: mesmerized by an ideal thought. Need to develop discrimination
Niruddha: self control to generate an ideal thought. Need to develop Shatasampati-tuning to higher soul
Samadhi

4 states of mind:
Jagrata
Swapna
Sushupta
Turiya/Trance

There are some techniques in hatha yoga to experience the Turiya state of mind/ Trance state of mind. One of them is *to focus on the tip of the nose*
Awesome!!!!

Meditation can be used to develop a virtue and hence the character building. This explains the importance of meditation on loving kindness. The meditation is empowered by the teacher with omph mantra.

Chanting a mantra is also a form of meditation. If the mantra is the name of a great being, eventually a connection is established and the Guru/ great being will send constant energy through this connection even when you are not meditating. If the mantra is blessed/ concecrated, it generates sympathetic vibrations around even in the higher plane and helps the soul consciousness to be uplifted.
Good incence and right posture also can produce the higher state of consciousness to the mind and environment. Exercise and breathing rhythm also adds to it
This explains the Arhatic yoga procedure and it's significance.

Some interesting symbolic meaning:

Original Sin: It's the traces of the previous life time tendencies. These matters are attracted when the mental/astral body is being formed. However, whether the tendencies will become active in this life depends on the upbringing by parents and to some extent the environment. In childhood the soul has less impact on the bodies.

Baptism: its intended to minimise the effects of seeds. The energy of the baptised water will pour down to purify the Etheric body then rushes up to purify the astral and mental body.

The holy water: is rich in spiritual energy which attracts the higher vibration material to form the body which eventually stiffens and becomes part of the habit

Exorcism: To remove the evil to prevent from being encouraged during the lifetime

Finally by making the symbol of cross on the child, the priest builds the thoughtform which yields the divine force. A nature spirit known as sylph is assigned to the thoughtform and a guardian angel to nurture. Eventually the sylph individualises and becomes a seraph.

If a baptised child dies immediately also, it's protected in its astral life due to the energies of baptism.

The Astral Body by A.E. Powell

Today I finished reading the book "The Astral Body". I have below 2 versions of its review. One a shorter version. For those who are interested read on the extractions from the book that caught my attention.
The first impact of this book is, it removed the fear of death significantly. The delusions of hell are clarified to a greater extent. Physical death is the beginning of a new life which is far more liberal. The right preparation can make life after a greater celebration, learning and growing experience. It's a must read for all.

Some interesting extracts from the book:

Astral beings respond to sounds. They also respond to colours. The intensity of impact of the colours is same as sound.
Insights
* This is probably the significance of applying tumeric and Kumkum powder at the entrance. What a perfect Feng shui for the houses!
* This also could be the significance of Rangoli, it's structures and the colours used in front of the houses
* The mandalas in the homa and Buddhist mandalas needs more study to understand the significance.

Something interesting.... The emotions of greed and depression form vertical bars in the astral body. Which looks like a cage. How true...we do imprison ourselves when we are under the influence of such emotions.

The web of the chakra offers no resistance to the higher budhic and atmic vibrations. While it filters to its level best the lower astral energies. This explains how the physical life is isolated from astral, even though the two worlds co-exist in space. God's creation and strategies are simply outstanding... Please read the Pranic healing books by Master Choa to appreciate the omniscient aspect of God in this design.

Function of thought forms in the astral plane is a very useful information in this book. I was awestruck to know Goddess Kali was a thought form ​created by the Atlantans and this entity has lived for so many many years. The sacrifices offered to these deities and similar practices are now more understandable.
An author of a novel creates thought forms of the characters in the story. Often when these thought forms become stronger...they tend to guide the author in a different story line depending on the characteristics it has picked up. This answers why most authors start with a story in their mind but usually end up writing it very differently.
The astral plane has characters like Sherlock Holmes, Robinson Crusoe.....which appear to be real people but are actually thought forms.!!!

Smoking/tobacco kills astral body. It will decompose certain parts of the astral body anthe.... So that emotions are sort of dead. That's y in the physical body you feel relieved. But when the physical body dies, it's like having a handicap astral body. It's very painful and difficult.
Alcohol on the other hand attracts astral beings who feed on the scent of blood and spirit. So they tempt the alcoholic person to involve in such activities that will fulfill the desire of these elementals.

A higher thought or emotion produces 💯 times more effect/vibrations than the lower. This is because it is easier to move the finer particles of Astral and mental body than coarser lower particle.
If not for this ordinary people can never make any progress. What a designing principle!!

If the soul has been a habitual drinker in the past incarnation, these desires exist in the astral body. They are under control of the will when the body is awake but when the physical body is asleep, the consciousness may slip out of the control of the soul and reach the drinking temptations. Hence sometimes a non alcoholic person dreams of drinking and enjoying the alcohol in his dream.

When the soul escapes to the astral body either in sleep or in death, it communicates with the astral plane with the grossest astral particle since it's closest to the physical life. As the soul evolves it starts communicating with the finer particles of the astral body. Then the awareness of  lower emotions​ and the physical body starts to become dimmer and faded out.
That's why the friend in the astral plane appears to have evolved. Actually it's the self which has evolved and now the self is aware of higher qualities than the lower.

This explains why Master Choa said..." You see in others, what is in you"

The Holy Science by Sri Yukteshwaragiri

I finished reading this book yesterday. I thought I would be able to read it in 2 days since it's a 100 pages book. More precisely 98 pages. Huh... No way. The content is so vast and deep that its so not easy to rush through.
I think I am too tiny to rate this book. I definitely need to read it again to get a better perception.
I would rather quote some of my favorites in this book:
The natural food that suits the human teeth and intestinal structures is neither non veg nor the veg food that we eat. It's neither structured like carnivore nor like the herbivore. Human body is most suited for Fruits as the main food. This contributes to the rate of our spiritual evolution.

The description of the 4 varnas🦄🕊🌹: Shudra means... Lower serving the higher.
Lower nature serving the purpose of higher nature. Lower nature like aggressiveness, anger, desire..... aligning to the higher nature, like... Aggressively developing self truthfulness, productive anger to bring self transformation, desire of peace and love for all....
Kshatriya is the one who has developed the discernment to distinguish between higher and lower. The one who fights his weaknesses to overcome the vices and develop the virtue. In fact we are all fighting our weaknesses to achieve something higher all the time.
 Vaysya is a disciple who has found the Guru. He learns from the teacher and in turn practices and spreads work. What a lovely business...
Brahmana is the one illuminated. The one who can guide others in the path of evolution.
Isn't it amazing that we all pass through the all the varnas in one stage or the other in our lives.

1. Dwija- knowledge of bhuvarloka/ Etheric double. This is the state of awareness in Dwapara yuga
2. Vipra- Awareness of swaraloka/ astral energies. Knowledge of sound/ mantras. State of evolution in Treta yuga
3. Brahmana- awareness of jnanloka/ mental plane. State of evolution in Satya Yuga
4. Kavalya- Illuminated state of consciousness

What a wonderful understanding and detailing. I was super surprised to know we are in the Dwapara Yuga. It's been roughly 300+ yrs we have entered this era. No wonder we have a natural awareness and sensitivity to energies. The description of the yugas, their calculation, impact of the constellation is the main attraction of the book.

Do take time to read this wonder piece by the great Saint Sri Yukteshwaragiri.

Inner Teachings of Hinduism Revealed by GMCKS

Last weekend I attended the course on "Inner Teachings of Hinduism Revealed" and today I completed reading this book. It took almost 3 weeks to read this book. Not that the book is exhaustive.... But the content of the book is so intense, thought provoking that I had to take a break meditate and digest the information frequently.

On my own, my logical brain never wondered what could be the possible meanings of the Hindu customs, traditions, chantings, pictures of the Gods and Godesses.

Did you know:
Ganesha does not literally mean a God with elephant head?
Hanuman is not really a monkey? Which also means he is NOT the missing link between monkeys and humans...
The real message of the festival holi and the significance of flying the kites?
Why do Hindus draw Swastik in the Pooja room?
Why are our Gods shown with blue skin?
Does the dips in the Ganga remove karmas?
Did Lord Krishna dance on a snake 🐍?
Significance of the Kalyani in the temples?
Significance of the peacock feather?

.
.
...... I can go on :)

I strongly recommend reading this book. We will not only appreciate the rituals and practices of Hinduism but also be motivated to practice and benefit.

The best impact of this book is.... It opens our eye to realise that "Truth is universal. All religions in the world speak the same truth worded differently".

The Masters and the path by CW Leadbeater

Reading this book all over again for the second time. This is one of my favourite books. Hope to find more insights this time.
This is a basic book for theosophical book study. The book gives beautiful heart opening descriptions of initiations, the initiates, who is a student, who is a disciple....and the wonder journey of all the souls.
I will add more details after my next detailed reading of this book.

Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahamsa Yogananda

Most of us have read this book or at least heard of it. This is one book that I took longest time to complete the reading. I have taken almost 7 years to finish reading this..... :P
No...not that the book is in anyway tough to comprehend but just that I was soooo involved on every page of this book, that I just could not convince myself to read the chapter "Last Days with my Guru".........Finally I made up my mind to read through and wept like a child. The feeling was so similar to what I felt when my teacher left..........

This book can trigger spiritual interest in any soul. The direct words and perceptions of an illuminated yogi can melt any heart, touch any soul....

Dreams, Life After Death, The Astral Plane, The Mental Plane, Invisible Helpers by CW Leadbeater

Leadbeater has been one of my all time favourite author. Some of the books I have read in the past, authored by him are:

The Mental Plane
Invisible Helpers

The information in the above books are on the same lines, but the content is distinctly unique. It gives a clear vision of why some dreams are relevant and some are not. Why some things are predictable in life, why sometimes, the situation is so inevitable. How some prayers and good will bring magical good luck and protection. How does karma impact our life and life after death, where does the soul go after the physical life is over.....!!!

Thought forms book opens a new dimension to vision and the world around. It gives an understanding of the paranormal visions and interpretations.
The Devachanic Plane is similar to the book The Mental Plane.

Masters and the path is a must reading if you are keen on the understanding the esoteric concepts. Its the first book to be read to explore the deeper and abstract concepts of esoteric study, initiations, the path and divine plan. reading this book just once may not be sufficient. But atleast one reading is a must before you pick up other books by theosophy authored by Alice Bailey, Madam HPB......

Conversations With God Book One by Neal Donald Walsch

Finished reading this book. And I am surely going to read it again!!!
When I started reading the book, with the first few pages....I had to pause, close the book and talk to myself. I felt the book is a fiction, pure imagination...So I told myself, I will read it as a story book....pick up the contents which is in align with my beliefs and discard the rest.....

By the time, I had completed about 20 pages of the book....I believed the contents have been derived from a reliable source and there is actually nothing much to discard.
40 Pages: I was sure the answers are from an evolved soul with rich experience of illumination. I had a very interesting experience which lasted its impact for more than a week.
A colleague at work was angry with me for some silly reason. But surprisingly, my reaction to her was very saintly.....I looked at her and acknowledged that "I the GOD is experiencing anger through her form towards I the GOD in my form. Actually, there was nothing to be angry or upset about, because we are not two different entities but the same GOD in two different physical projections." As I starred at her with no emotions, she had nothing further to trigger the anger and she left. This is something I had not expected in the wildest of my dreams. By the way....not that I was out of my sense in deep bliss at that moment. I was completely aware and the acknowledgement came to me as if it was my true nature at ease.

I had to read this book with more focus and every line was now coming to me as highly important.
The book has changed my perception about God and his availability. The truth and its authenticity. My self and my abilities to choose, control and change whats best for me. That includes: Life, society, religion, money........ and I Me Myself

When I had completed the book by 80%, I was sure GOD is actually talking to me!!!!
This book is a must read. Read it over and over again....Its a worth conversation!!!!

Chakras and their functions By Master Choa Kok Sui

Finish reading this book in a week. Very informative. I had better insights of the chakras, their functions and why we treat them for certain ailments....

Clairvoyance by CW Leadbeater

Finished reading this book during my stay in the Ashram. It was a quick reading. CWL has always been one of my favourite writer but this book has disappointed me. Its too wordy.....
Much of the content was related to astral travel than the ability to see.....may be relevant but I was hoping for a different information. Even the useful information in the book can be consolidated to max of 2 pages.
> I like the title of the chapters that gives different types of Clairvoyantic vision.
> The ability to attract the person or recognise the person in the mental plane based on the unique vibration was nice. These vibrations can be triggered easily in this plane and there by any person can be called upon or recognised.

Though the book begins with a note that, it is not intended to prove the existence of Clairvoyance, most of the content of the book, including the testimonials are just doing that....rather than guiding through the actually info or technique on Clairvoyance.

I would give a 2 star to this book. I completed reading this, only because it was on my list.

The Safron Robe by Lobsang Rampa

This is another book I finished reading in the month of Sep'14. It was an interesting read. Again too wordy but the Lobsang Rampa has been very prompt with every detail and it takes you through the whole journey intensely.
I just felt it was a little too monkish. At times it put me down with a thought that the spiritual life is meant to be boring and hard...very hard....
Overall its been a very good reading. Now moving to the next in the series by the same author...."The Third Eye"

Etheric Double by Author E Powel

Finish reading this book on 12th Feb 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember having borrowed this book from a friend in 2002. I found the subject so complex that I returned the book after reading...orrrr I should say after glancing the first 2 pages.

After 15yrs thankfully my mind has matured to understand and appreciate this wonderful book. I love the "to the point" approach in the book. I enjoyed reading every chapter. The insights were amazing. Impact on my healing approaches are yet to be explored. I definitely appreciate the teachings of my Guru with greater respect and gratitude.

I liked the chapter on Death the most. The Inner reflection technique from Master Choa is such an impacting method to prepare for the best moment of life.

Just to add a few words on this chapter...: Death is more like our Sprint Retrospection. As per the book, when the physical life is about to end...in those last few minutes, the soul retrospects the life. Every thought and emotion produced in life, every activity and words will flash pass. The soul tries to understand what has been the predominant thought and influence of the incarnation. Lessons learnt are documented and an affirmation made to rectify the mistakes and carry forward the good learnings to the next life.
Why wait for the death? Why not prepare for the moment to review life on a regular basis? Why not affirm to rectify the mistakes and strengthen the virtues? Regular basis can even be Daily....Hopefully what flashes at death will probably be the positive affirmations and that could probably make death more peaceful and less or no guilt to carry forward!! :)

The book is worth reading...I have 2 more A.E Powell books to read. For now I will switch to a non spiritual book. Just to strike a practical balance in the thought process of life.

Christianity revealed by Master Choa

I finished reading this book 3 days back.
Such intricate understanding of the teachings of Christianity revealed in such simple words.... I have no words to appreciate the transformation this book has brought. I need to read it many more times... Probably watch Master Co's video on this book can further fine tune my understanding.
