I finished reading this book about a month ago. Just got carried away with too many things before I wrote this review. I adored every page I read. My heart is filled with immense love, heights of respect to these real heroes of our nation. They have no six packs, no fancy clothes and no funky styles to impress the people. They don't even get luxuries of incentives and awards. As captain Raghuraman mentions in his TEDex talks, no jumboories to convince them to give up their lives. We eat our daily breads and sleep in peace...while these heroes stand against the odds of humanity, terrorists, enemies, calamities to fetch us that peace.
I cannot imagine the courage and daringness that creeps into these super ordinary people who enter into army. How can one say that 2 bullets in the body cannot kill a commando and run behind to fetch down the enemy? How can an ordinary human walk against the firing bullets without any cover, without any bullet proof jackets? How can a man who has hit the ground in the pool of his own blood, use his last breath to fire 30 bullets towards the enemy? How can one focus on securing the borders of the nation and his team while his mom is fight cancer in the hospital.....Is there anything that bothers these men while they fight for our nation, for the peace of ordinary people like you and me?
Whats ironical is when they return home from the war field, they have to still workout ways to pay back the loans, adjust the expenses to afford the EMIs, drive the second hand Maruthi 800 car, oblige the odds of life just like you and me. They are born and brought up ordinary but they have transformed themselves into heroes who don't even care the fame. They have no fan clubs!!!!
Before I bought this book, I was reading the review comments on amazon. Someone wrote, that this book is too dramatic and at times filmy. What struck me hard while reading the book was, these ordinary people called army commandos and soldiers have lead filmy, dramatic REAL life. Every time I had remind myself that these are real stories. Just simple narration of the incidences sound dramatic because that's how extraordinary those heroes are.
This book has made me question myself. We crib about petty things not knowing the real courage within us. Not knowing the true potentials in us. We tolerate the creepy politicians who throw the national security to dogs and conveniently blame the army forces. Its important to explore the truth in ourselves, the truth behind our actions and inaction.
I strongly recommend this book to all of you. Please take time to read. Every penny is worth. It will give you a strange courage to explore your potentials, it will awaken not just the sense of pride for nation but also a deeper commitment to build your own virtues. It will humble you down to face the obvious truth that we have achieved nothing really in reality to blow up our ego.
One of the narration is about the surgical strike. Listen to the description from the horse's mouth:
